The brief they came with
Hair Diamondz sells luxury virgin and raw hair extensions, with bundle deals on Brazilian, Indian, Malaysian, Spanish and Vietnamese hair in tape-in, clip-in and sew-in styles. The live store ran on Shopify's free Dawn theme. Jeannie liked how it looked but wanted it to be easier for customers to shop. She had already bought the Wonder theme.
The brief covered new home page sections, including featured products with UGC videos, and better collection pages. Everything had to be editable without code. The agreed scope was a Wonder revamp with a white background, uniform spacing and a mobile responsive layout, starting with the home page.
The problem
The store looked good but was not easy enough to shop. On Dawn, the layout and functionality felt limited, and Jeannie wanted shoppers to find the right hair faster.
A first attempt had gone wrong. Another freelancer had added Wonder features on a preview theme, but the result missed what she had in mind. She preferred the old live site, so the new theme had made things worse, not better.
The home page broke its own style. Mannequin heads sat below a polished hero section and pulled the look down, right where shoppers choose a collection.
Jeannie does not code and runs the business alongside a full-time job. She had bought Shogun and was looking at GemPages to get the look she wanted, which meant another tool to learn and manage. She needed sections she could edit herself from Shopify admin.
After one bad experience, she wanted proof before a full rebuild. Seeing a few finished sections first was the only way to trust the direction.
What we built
- 01 White background, new fonts and even spacing We started with the home page, as agreed, so Jeannie could judge the direction before the rest of the site changed. We set white as the background, updated the fonts and color schemes in Wonder's theme settings, and gave every section the same spacing. The aim was a clean, calm layout that still felt like the luxury store she already liked, not the busier Wonder preview from before.
- 02 Collection tiles in place of mannequin heads Jeannie felt the mannequin heads on the home page did not match the polish of the hero section. We swapped them for product images that link straight to each collection, so a shopper can go from the hero to Brazilian, Indian, Malaysian, Spanish or Vietnamese hair in one tap.
- 03 Featured products beside UGC videos Her reference document asked for featured products with UGC videos. We built a section that sets a video and a product side by side, so customers see the hair worn by real people next to the add to cart button. The section is set up in the theme editor, so the team can change videos and products from Shopify admin without code.
- 04 Collection pages built inside the Wonder theme Jeannie had bought Shogun and was weighing GemPages because she thought themes were too limited for collection pages. Wonder already had sections close to her references, so we customized those instead and kept everything in one theme. The collection pages cover the store's hair origins and its tape-in, clip-in and sew-in ranges.
- 05 Tidier product pages and an About page The product pages were partly set up in the earlier preview, so we kept what worked and brought them into line with the new spacing, fonts and colors. For the About page we reused copy from the old home page, which already told the brand's story. Jeannie could send extra images wherever a section needed them.
- 06 Mobile checks across every section Every section was checked on mobile, since the brief asked for a fully responsive store. Because the sections are dynamic, the team can keep updating content and images themselves.
