How much do Shopify maintenance packages cost?

Shopify maintenance packages start at $299/month. We price by tier, not by revenue, so what you pay tracks how much development a month your store actually consumes and how fast you need us to respond, nothing else. Every plan is a flat monthly fee: no hourly billing, no surprise invoices, and 10% off when you pay annually.

Starter Care is the low-risk way in: a free store audit to begin, the first month free, no lock-in, and an always-on safety net of uptime and broken-link monitoring, monthly backups, a monthly vitals snapshot, and small fixes. Upgrade to Growth within 60 days and we credit the Starter fee in full.

Essential is the base plan for a stable store: 20 hours a month, same-business-day response, updates managed, bugs fixed, vitals watched.

Growth is the flagship and the best value for most brands: 40 hours a month on a 4-hour SLA, plus a priority Slack pod, a quarterly CRO review with 1-2 tests shipped, ongoing SEO monitoring, and a dedicated account contact. This is the tier where the store doesn’t just stay healthy, it improves.

Scale is for Shopify Plus and multi-store setups where maintenance blends into ongoing development: a custom 70+ hour band, the tightest SLA we offer, and a monthly strategy call.

What is a Shopify retainer, and why not just pay hourly?

A Shopify retainer is a standing monthly agreement: a flat fee buys a band of development hours plus always-on maintenance, rather than billing by the hour or scoping every small change as a separate project. The point is not the hours on paper, it’s that the store has a team that already knows it and watches it daily.

Hourly billing sounds cheaper until you live with it, then it doesn’t. Every request becomes a quote, every quote becomes a delay, and the small fixes that quietly cost you conversions never make the cut because they’re not worth the admin. A monthly retainer removes that friction: the fix that would take a fortnight to scope and schedule elsewhere ships this week, because the relationship and the hours already exist.

The flat fee is the part that matters most. You know the number before the month starts and it doesn’t move, which is the opposite of the hours-only agencies where the invoice is a surprise you open at month-end.

What a Shopify maintenance retainer covers

A Shopify store is software, and software drifts. Themes ship updates that quietly break customised sections. Apps change their APIs, their pricing, or disappear entirely. Checkout requirements evolve, Core Web Vitals thresholds tighten, and the “small fix” list grows faster than anyone inside the business has time to handle. A maintenance retainer is the fix for drift. Here’s what ours covers on every tier:

Theme and app updates, managed. We review update changelogs before applying anything, test on a duplicate theme, and roll out without downtime. When an update would break a customisation, we adapt the customisation instead of skipping the update, skipped updates are how stores end up unfixable two years later.

Security and uptime. Shopify handles platform security, but your theme code, third-party scripts, and app permissions are on you. We audit script tags quarterly, prune abandoned app permissions, and monitor uptime so a broken deploy never runs silent for a weekend.

Core Web Vitals. Every month you get a report on LCP, CLS, and INP against the previous month, with the cause named when something regresses. Speed decays through app additions and content changes, catching a 300ms regression in month one is cheap, catching it in month twelve is a project.

Bug fixes and small enhancements. The rolling list every store accumulates: a spacing bug on mobile, a new badge on PDPs, a banner for the next drop. Retainer hours cover them inside the month instead of waiting for a project slot.

Quarterly CRO review (Growth and above). Maintenance keeps the store healthy; the quarterly review makes it better. Every three months we review funnel data and ship 1-2 conversion tests, so the store improves on retainer rather than just surviving.

Shopify maintenance vs hiring in-house

The alternative to a maintenance retainer is usually a part-time Shopify developer or a junior hire. The maths rarely favours it below a certain size. A capable Shopify developer costs far more per month than any of these tiers, comes with the overhead of recruitment and management, takes holidays, and, crucially, brings the experience of one store: yours.

A retainer brings the pattern recognition of a team that maintains dozens of Shopify stores. The bug you hit is one we’ve seen before. The app conflict was diagnosed on someone else’s store last quarter. The Core Web Vitals regression has a known cause. You’re buying breadth of exposure, not just hours, and you can scale the hours up or down a tier as the store’s needs change without hiring or firing anyone.

In-house wins once the store is large enough to keep a full-time developer genuinely busy every day. Below that, a retainer is cheaper, faster, and better-informed.

How to choose a Shopify maintenance agency

Four questions separate a real maintenance partner from a ticket queue:

  1. Is the fee flat and known in advance? If the answer involves “it depends on hours,” you’ll be opening surprise invoices. Ours is a fixed monthly number by tier.
  2. What’s the response SLA, in writing? “We’ll get to it” is not an SLA. Ask for the guaranteed response time, and check whether emergencies jump the queue. Ours range from same business day to 4 hours.
  3. Does maintenance include improvement, or only survival? A plan that just applies updates keeps the store alive. A plan with a CRO review built in makes it better. Growth and Scale include one.
  4. Can you leave? Long lock-ins protect the agency, not you. We ask for 90 days to make setup worthwhile, then you can cancel any time, and Starter Care has no lock-in at all.

If you want to see which tier fits before committing to anything, send your store through the form. The store review is free and comes back within 48 hours with what we’d watch, what we’d fix first, and the plan we’d recommend.

Questions

Shopify maintenance package FAQs.

How much do Shopify maintenance packages cost?

Our Shopify maintenance packages start at $299/month for Starter Care and run to $1,749/month for Scale, billed as a flat monthly fee with no hourly surprises. Pay annually and every plan is 10% cheaper. The tier you need depends on how many dev hours a month your store consumes and how fast you need us to respond, not on your revenue.

How much does a Shopify retainer cost?

A Shopify retainer with us is a flat monthly fee by tier, $299 (Starter, 10 hrs), $579 (Essential, 20 hrs), $1,079 (Growth, 40 hrs), or from $1,749 (Scale, 70+ hrs). Annual billing takes 10% off any tier. Unlike hours-only agencies, the number is fixed and known in advance, and the Starter tier's first month is free.

What is a Shopify monthly retainer?

A Shopify monthly retainer is a standing agreement where you pay a flat fee each month for a set band of development hours plus always-on maintenance, updates, monitoring, bug fixes, and reporting, rather than paying by the hour or per project. It exists so the store has a team that already knows it, watches it daily, and can ship a fix this week instead of scheduling a project next month.

What does a Shopify maintenance package include?

Every tier includes theme and app updates managed for you (tested on a duplicate theme, no downtime), security and uptime monitoring with a quarterly script and permission audit, a monthly Core Web Vitals report, bug fixes and small enhancements inside the month, and priority Slack support. Growth and above add a quarterly CRO review with 1-2 tests shipped, ongoing SEO monitoring, and a dedicated account contact.

Do you offer a Shopify support plan with same-day response?

Yes. Essential answers same business day, Growth carries a 4-hour response SLA, and Scale gets the tightest SLA we offer. A broken checkout or a down store jumps the queue on every plan, emergencies don't wait for a scheduled sprint.

What's the difference between the maintenance packages?

Hours per month and response speed. Starter Care is 10 hours with next-business-day response, Essential is 20 hours same-business-day, Growth is 40 hours on a 4-hour SLA, and Scale is a custom 70+ hour band for Plus and multi-store setups. Every tier shares the same base, updates, monitoring, the monthly Core Web Vitals report, and bug fixes.

Is there a free trial or a low-risk way to start?

Starter Care is the low-risk entry point, the first month is free, there's no lock-in, and it starts with a free store audit. If you upgrade to Growth within 60 days we credit the Starter fee in full. It's designed to remove every reason to say no, so we can become the team that already knows your store.

What happens to unused hours?

They don't roll over indefinitely, but we use a 30-day grace window so you're never penalised for a quiet month.

Can we cancel?

Anytime after the first 90 days. We ask for the initial 90 to make the work worth setting up. Starter Care has no lock-in at all.

Do you handle emergency fixes?

Yes. Priority Slack support means a broken checkout or a down store jumps the queue, within 4 business hours on Growth, same business day on Essential. Emergencies don't wait for a scheduled sprint.

What isn't covered by a maintenance retainer?

App subscription costs and theme licences stay on your accounts, and major redesigns or platform migrations are separate projects rather than retainer work. Anything beyond your tier's monthly hours is quoted before we start it, never billed as a surprise.
