Migration · Squarespace → Shopify

Squarespace makes a beautiful site. It's not a beautiful store.

Squarespace was built as a website builder first and added commerce later. Once you're running a real store, the gap shows up in checkout, taxes, fulfilment, and the apps that just aren't there.

Why brands leave Squarespace

Squarespace's commerce works for a handful of products and a handful of orders per week.

Once the store becomes the business, the cracks appear quickly, checkout that can't be customised, no real subscription option without leaving the platform, tax handling that breaks at scale, an "app" marketplace measured in dozens. The site still looks good. It's just no longer the right tool.

  • The app marketplace is roughly a tenth of Shopify's. The integrations you'll need next year don't exist on Squarespace.

  • Checkout customisation is shallow, abandoned cart, post-purchase upsells, and 3PL hand-offs are all painful.

  • Subscription / membership / B2B all require workarounds rather than first-class support.

  • Tax handling, multi-currency, and international shipping are weaker than Shopify Markets out of the box.

  • Mobile speed scores are typically lower than Shopify equivalents because Squarespace ships heavier theme code.

Squarespace-specific gotchas

What actually breaks when you migrate.

Most migration vendors quote a price and stay vague on what's hard. These are the Squarespace-specific traps and how we handle each one.

  • Squarespace's content blocks (galleries, summary blocks, accordions) don't map to Shopify sections.

    How we handle it →
We rebuild your storefront using Shopify Online Store 2.0 sections that match the same look, your customers see the same site, faster, with proper merchandising flexibility.

  • Product variants on Squarespace use a single-axis model that doesn't fit Shopify's three-axis variant system cleanly.

    How we handle it →
We restructure variants on import, colour/size/material as proper variant axes, with metafield fallbacks for anything that doesn't fit.

  • Squarespace URLs (`/shop/product-name`) follow a different pattern than Shopify (`/products/product-name`).

    How we handle it →
We export every product, gallery, blog, and content URL and load a 301 redirect map into Shopify before DNS flips so SEO equity transfers without loss.

  • Squarespace's blog and gallery content has no clean export.

    How we handle it →
We use the Squarespace XML export plus a custom scraper to pull every post, image, and gallery, then re-publish them as Shopify blog posts with original publish dates intact.

  • Member areas and digital downloads need replacement.

    How we handle it →
We move members to Shopify Customer Accounts with gated content, and downloads to a digital-product app like SendOwl or Sky Pilot.

Data we preserve

Your customers, orders, SEO, nothing left behind.

  • Products with variants, options, and custom fields

  • Customer accounts with order history

  • Order history with full status, fulfilment, refund records

  • Categories and tags

  • 301 redirects for every URL, products, blog, gallery, pages

  • SEO metadata including page titles and descriptions

  • Blog posts with original publish dates and author attribution

  • Gallery images and content pages

  • Coupons and gift cards

  • Member-area content (where applicable)

Squarespace feature → Shopify equivalent

Every feature has a Shopify-side answer.

The thing most migration vendors leave vague: which Shopify app, theme, or Function replaces each piece of your existing stack. We tell you in week one.

Squarespace Shopify equivalent
Squarespace template Shopify Online Store 2.0 theme rebuilt for the same look
Squarespace Member Areas Shopify Customer Accounts + gated content / Bold Memberships
Squarespace Email Campaigns Shopify Email or Klaviyo
Acuity Scheduling Tipo Booking or keep Acuity (it has a Shopify integration)
Squarespace Subscriptions Shopify Subscriptions or Recharge
Native gallery / portfolio blocks Shopify metaobjects + custom theme sections
Stripe Tax (built in) Shopify Tax (built in), same coverage, often cheaper
How the migration runs

A staged migration. Not a weekend sprint.

3-4 weeks of structured work, discovery, scripts, theme rebuild, redirect map, UAT, launch. Every phase has a deliverable you keep.

  1. 01, Audit & content inventory

We catalogue every product, page, blog post, gallery, and member feature on your Squarespace site so nothing gets lost in the move.

  2. 02, Theme rebuild on Shopify

We pick a Shopify theme that matches your current aesthetic and rebuild the page-block structure as proper sections so your team can edit it without code.

  3. 03, Data migration

Products, customers, and orders move via export + custom script. Blog posts and galleries via XML + scraping. Everything reviewed on a Shopify dev store.

  4. 04, URL mapping & SEO

We export your full URL list, generate 301 redirects for every product, blog, gallery, and content page, and preserve metadata and structured data.

  5. 05, Test launch on staging

Password-protected dev store; you and your team run the full checkout, abandoned cart, email, and member flows before we touch DNS.

  6. 06, Launch + 30-day stabilisation

DNS cutover with monitoring on 404s, organic traffic, and conversion. We patch anything that drifts in the first month.

You don’t need to abandon what makes the site feel like yours, the brand, the typography, the layout, all of that comes across cleanly. You’re swapping the engine, not the body.

What we keep, what we rebuild

We keep: products, customers, orders, blog content, galleries, SEO equity, brand identity.

We rebuild: theme architecture (because Squarespace and Shopify use fundamentally different content models), variants (because Squarespace’s single-axis variants need to be properly axis-mapped), and any member-area / download workflow.

What we don’t do

  • We don’t promise to recreate every Squarespace block one-for-one. Some of them are aesthetic conventions; others have proper Shopify equivalents that work better. We tell you which is which up front.
  • We don’t migrate Squarespace stores doing under $50k/yr unless there’s a clear growth plan, at small volumes, the platform shift adds friction without unlocking enough upside.
  • We don’t carry over Squarespace’s URL structure. The 301 redirects do the SEO work; the new URLs are cleaner.

Squarespace migration FAQ

Common questions about Squarespace → Shopify.

Will my site still look like my Squarespace site?

Yes, closer than you'd expect. Modern Shopify themes are flexible enough to match almost any Squarespace aesthetic. We'll show you a side-by-side staging build before launch.

What about my custom fonts and brand styling?

Both fully supported. Shopify themes accept custom fonts (Adobe Fonts, Google Fonts, self-hosted), brand colours, and CSS overrides, no compromise on visual identity.

Can my team still update content without a developer?

More easily than on Squarespace, actually. Online Store 2.0 sections + theme blocks let you rearrange and edit homepage modules from the Shopify admin. Most clients say it's simpler post-migration.

I have member areas and digital downloads. Will those work?

Yes. Shopify Customer Accounts gate content for logged-in members, and apps like SendOwl handle digital downloads with delivery tracking and license keys.

How much will this cost monthly post-migration?

Most former Squarespace stores land on Shopify Basic ($39/mo) or Shopify ($105/mo). Once you add 1-2 essential apps (email, reviews), total monthly is roughly comparable to Squarespace Business + Stripe Tax.

Will I lose my Google rankings?

With our 301 redirect map and metadata preservation, no measurable loss. Search Console keeps its history because we re-submit the new sitemap on launch day.
