The brief they came with
The Botaness makes handcrafted moss wall art in Kelowna, British Columbia, using preserved moss and botanicals. Shauna sells finished pieces online, takes custom residential and commercial projects, and runs private and seasonal workshops. She had set the store up herself and wanted someone to help as the business grew.
The first request was urgent: undo a change she had made to one product that had spread to all of them. After that came purchase terms at checkout, a new contact form, and a blog that showed the wrong page when people searched for it.
The problem
Shauna created a Workshop Gift Card by copying an existing product setup. The change carried over to the product template, so all seven artwork products picked up the gift card's layout.
Each piece is made to order, and orders can ship outside Canada. Buyers needed to know before paying that shipping could be finalised later, that customs and brokerage fees were theirs, and that custom work is final sale. None of this was shown at checkout.
The contact form didn't ask what people needed. Shauna wanted commercial enquiries, workshop bookings and general questions to arrive already sorted, with each person's preferred way to be contacted.
When customers searched for the blog, the first result was an old "Our Blog" page that talked about workshops instead of listing posts.
What we built
- 01 The original product template put back We met Shauna on a Zoom call to see the issue, then traced the change to the shared product template. We restored the original layout on the seven artwork products and gave the Workshop Gift Card a template of its own, so it can be edited without touching anything else. Shauna checked the store the next day and confirmed it looked right.
- 02 Purchase terms every buyer has to accept Shauna wanted buyers to confirm they had read her terms before paying. We added a terms and conditions app that asks buyers to agree before they check out, and Shauna can edit the wording in the app's settings. We loaded her 14 clauses, covering payment before production, final shipping charges, customs and import fees, a 48-hour window for damage claims, moss care, and the two-year workmanship warranty, and published the same text on the store's Terms of Service page.
- 03 A contact form that sorts enquiries We rebuilt the contact page with clickable tiles instead of drop-downs. Customers first pick what they need: Custom Residential Moss Art, Custom Commercial or Hospitality, Private Workshop Booking, or General Question. Then they choose how to be contacted, by email, phone call or text message, before writing their message. Both choices are required, so each enquiry arrives already sorted. Shauna said she was impressed when it went live.
- 04 Blog search that leads to the blog We hid the old "Our Blog" page that was showing workshop content and added links to the real blog in the header and footer. We then set the store so searches for "blog", "blogs" or "news" list the published posts, and showed Shauna which tags to add to new posts so they keep appearing in those results.
